British Columbia, Yukon and the Territories

Conor Andrew Stuart Conor Andrew Stuart, a recent graduate from Hugh McRoberts Secondary in Richmond, BC has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist him in achieving his goal of becoming a Violinist/Composer. Conor is enrolled in a joint degree program: Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Engineering with a major in Music and Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

Conor has been studying violin privately for 11 years and has been a member of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra for nine. He has also studied piano privately for nine years, and is an able bassist. Having completed the Royal Conservatory of Music examinations in both violin and piano, he extended his love for performance to composition. As early as 2003, he entered the Music Week Canada Music Writing Competition, placing 1st provincially and 2nd nationally. Committed to refining his writing techniques, Conor has been studying music composition privately with Dr. Frederick Schipizky. He plans to study music composition at the graduate level. Conor submitted several instrumental and vocal compositions, both in the jazz and classical styles.

Emily Rae Newton Emily Rae Newton, a recent graduate from Crofton House School in Vancouver, BC has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist her in achieving her goal of becoming a Film Maker. Emily is enrolled in the school of Physical and Health Education with a major in filmmaking at Queens University.

Emily is an accomplished audio-visual artist with many award-winning productions to her credit. Her documentary called Breathe Easy about a young woman with Cystic Fibrosis won 1st place in the B.C. Student Film Festival (BCSFF) and 2nd place in Canadian International Film competition. It was also selected to be the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's official promotional tool. Splatters of my Life, a documentary about Tiko Kerr, an artist suffering from HIV, was awarded second place in the BCSFF. Closer to home, her humorous Back to School video was received with great delight by her whole school community. She has also filmed school sporting events such as field hockey. Emily submitted her documentary on Cystic Fibrosis, Breathe Easy.


Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Alan Leung Alan Leung, a recent graduate from John G. Drefenbaker High School in Calgary, AB has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Computer/3D Animator for games and short films. Alan is majoring in Computer Science at the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary.

Alan Leung has been fascinated by computers and 3D animation all of his life. In his spare time, in addition to mastering programs such as Maxon Cinema 4D and Adobe Premiere, he explores new games program revolutions and programming bugs in online gaming groups. Alan has developed many short films and is involved in every phase of production including concept development, storyboard creation, animation and final editing. His work has won first place at the 2005 St. Albert Catholic High School Film Festival. Alan submitted a 3D animated short film called Fantasy about the day in a life of a boy whose dream comes true when he goes to a town carnival.

Natasha Ruth Schmale Natasha Ruth Schmale, a recent graduate from The Centre For Learning @ Home based in Okotoks, Alberta, has been selected a recipient for a RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist her in achieving her goal of becoming a Photojournalist. Natasha is enrolled in the Journalism Arts Program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Natasha possesses exceptional communications skills and has been praised for her ability to listen and cut to the chase in a story. The publisher of Alberta Land & Life assigned her to research, write and photograph a story on the Mount Butte Natural Area. Her article will be published in the first edition. Natasha is passionate about politics and has volunteered with her local member of parliament. She hopes to combine her two interests and work internationally as a Journalist/Photojournalist with Reuters or National Geographic. Once she completes her course in Journalism, Natasha is considering pursuing a Bachelor of Communication Studies at the University of Calgary. Natasha submitted her magazine article.


Ontario

Tyler James Cowan Tyler James Cowan, a recent graduate from Abbey Park High School in Oakville, ON has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist him in achieving his goal of becoming a Professional Filmmaker. This fall, Tyler will attend the prestigious Image Arts Program (BFA) at Ryerson University and will major in Film Studies.

Tyler has garnered much attention both within his community and at a variety of Film and Theatre festivals throughout Ontario. Backtrack, his submission to Abbey Park High School's Take 48 Film Festival, won top honours in addition to Best Overall Production at the Halton Regional Festival. Tyler has enjoyed success on stage winning three Best Overall Production honours at the annual Abbey Park Show of Hands Drama Festival; two of which he wrote, directed and acted in. His comedy, The Last Stop, went on to the Sears Drama Festival where it received an Award of Excellence. He has worked as a production assistant on a commercial shoot, was a student finalist in the April 2006 Toronto International Film Festival and regularly volunteers as a cameraman at The Meeting House. Tyler enclosed his submission for the Take 48 Film Festival.

Allyson Bethany Parker Allyson Bethany Parker, a recent graduate from Cobourg District Collegiate Institute in Cobourg, ON has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist her in achieving her goal of becoming a Biological Field Researcher, Ornithologist. Allyson is enrolled in Biological Sciences with a major in Wildlife Biology and Ecology at the University of Guelph.

Allyson takes great interest in ecology and is specialized in bird species. She has completed six seasons of bird banding training at Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory and has participated in several Ornithologist programs at Long Point Bird Observatory. In 2005, she won the Canadian Geographic Polar Bound Contest and spent two weeks in Antarctica with Students On Ice. She organized the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up in her area and the Yellow Fish Road Project that raised awareness of the environmental damage caused by careless disposal of household toxic materials. Allyson earned the Distinguished Civic Award for Environmental Community Service from the Town of Cobourg and has volunteered at several local naturalist organizations and area provincial parks. Allyson enclosed her submission for the Canadian Geographic Polar Bound Contest.


Quebec and the Maritimes

Kristy Emiely Waalderbos Kristy Emiely Waalderbos, a recent graduate from Amherst Regional High in Amherst, NS has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist her in achieving her goal of becoming a self-employed Artistic Welder. Kristy is pursuing a welding diploma at the Nova Scotia Community College.

Kristy lives and breathes welding and has already created a number of practical and artistic projects including a farmer's bar stool, a barbeque, a mini moover cart, a decorative chair and a one-of-a kind bird sculpture; all in her spare time. She is passionate about her craft and loves to explore new things. Kristy enjoys working with her hands, solving problems and has the leadership skills to run her own business. She is president of her 4-H Club and hopes to share her welding talent with others. Kristy has also given much service to the community through her help with children at the local parish, and the pork chop barbeque at the local volunteer fire hall. Kristy presented a Power Point Presentation of her welding projects.

Mark Frederick Prince Mark Frederick Prince, a recent graduate from North Nova Education Centre in New Glasgow, NS has been selected as a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist him in achieving his goal of becoming a Musician. Mark is taking a Bachelor of Music with a major in Flute at the University of Western Ontario.

Mark has diverse musical talents. He has taken private flute lessons for eight years and piano for seven. To round out his instruction, he pursued three years of voice training. Mark won the 2005 Silver medal for best mark on a Grade 8 Flute exam in Atlantic Canada. He has also completed Grade 9 conservatory examinations in flute and piano. Mark contributed extensively to his school music department including nine years of concert band, four years of choir, three years of jazz choir and four years of participating in annual musical theatre productions. His ongoing commitment has paid off in many ways. He received first prize in the Junior Woodwind category at the Nova Scotia Provincial Music Festival this year, and also competed in musical theatre. Mark submitted a recording of selections from his flute repertoire.


French Language Applicants

Audrey Lalonde Audrey Lalonde, a recent graduate from Collège de Maisonneuve in Montréal, QC has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will assist her in achieving her goal of becoming an Ambulance Paramedic. Audrey is enrolled in Collège de Rosemont in Montreal for a year of social studies and will commence Ambulance Paramedics next year.

Audrey is a first aid specialist and has dedicated the last seven years of her extra-curricular life to community service. She is a Administrative Coordinator with the Saint John Ambulance Service and is certified to do advanced assistance. Audrey has received countless certificates for her dedication and earned the 2005 Claude Masson Prize for Young Volunteers from the Quebec Ministry of Employment and Social Solidarity. (Lauréate de l'édition 2005 du prix Hommage bénévoleat-Quebec, dans la catégorie « Jeune Bénévole - Prix Claude-Masson » pour la région de Montreal.) Audrey has completed the training required to instruct First Aid through the Saint John Ambulance Service and has recently achieved her official accreditation. Having volunteered and or worked at a hospital, park and arenas, Audrey has witnessed emergency situations in a variety of environments. She is keen to complete her studies and be able to focus all her energies on helping people. Audrey enclosed a written debate regarding advanced care paramedics in Quebec.

Guillaume Lanoie Guillaume Lanoie, a recent graduate from St-Hyacinthe CEGEP in St-Hyacinthe QC has been selected a recipient for an RBC Royal Bank Financial Lifeskills Scholarship. The $2,006 award will help him achieve his goal of becoming a Certified Management Accountant. Guillaume is enrolled in a Bachelor of Accounting Sciences at the Université de Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR).

Guillaume is industrious and remarkably focused in his career path. A quadriplegic since the age of 17, he has let nothing stand in his way of achieving his goals. From a 93% average to winning third place in the « mot d'or » business French competition for all of Quebec, his performance is exceptional. Guillaume has earned scholarships for his academic achievement and involvement in school and community. He has worked as an accountant trainee at his CEGEP and at a local firm. Guillaume is on the board of directors at the Saint-Hyacinthe CEGEP Student Cooperative. He presented a research project that evaluates if « impartition » represents a threat or opportunity for Canada.
